Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos has recently stated that Amazon now sells 6 e-books for every 10 physical books, largely thanks to Amazon's popular Kindle platform which is thought to have sold around 3 million units (Amazon are pretty tight-lipped on their sales figures).
When unveiling the iPad recently, Apple's Steve Jobs gave a back-handedly positive comment to Amazon, essentially saying that Amazon have done a great job pioneering eBook technology with Kindle, but "we'll take it from here guys." showing their intent with the iPad, which had already surpassed 3 million units in no time.
The launch of the iPad was the start of a huge push in the design and development of interactive eBooks, and with Apple (surprisingly) adopting an open-source format for its iPad books (ePub), the flood gates have been opened. |
Looking ahead, it seem as though the the iPad is even going to be damaging to IKEA's revenue, with many people opting to carry their entire library around on a wafer-thin touch-screen called iPad, the traditional bookcase, and even library, may soon be a relic of humanity's past.
One wonders what may become of printed newspapers in a few years.
The biggest ripples thus far have been caused by 'Alice for the iPad' which has been hugely successful because of its interactive rejuvenation of the classic (now public domain) children's story.
